What We're Looking For
When we think about the role of the Director of Music at Fourth Universalist and what makes it unique, these are a few things that come to mind. We hope it matches with you!
We are looking for someone who:
We are looking for someone who:
- Understands music as part of a worship experience. Our Director of Music is a worship leader, who is able to work with our clergy and staff to create and help lead services that touch the heart, stimulate the mind, and inspire action. They are able to perform beautiful music, but also accompany spoken prayer and meditations.
- Wants to build community and connection through music. Our Director of Music nurtures the choir and other lay musicians/vocalists, but is also a leader in the congregation more generally. They stay for coffee hour after the service because we hope that they would enjoy the community and connect with folks interested in music.
- Is open to experimentation, change, and lifelong learning. We ask this of all our staff and clergy. We are a diverse and a constantly evolving community, and so our leaders need to be able to roll with whatever life throws at us (the pandemic has been a prolonged exercise in this!). This includes being willing to learn and experiment with different musical styles and genres.
- Is supportive of helping us create a more just and free world. Social justice is an integral part of our community. We have welcomed LGBTQ members since the 1950s, had clergy call for defunding the police, sheltered undocumented immigrants marked for deportation, and sent over 150,000 post cards to fight voter suppression. We strive to be explicitly anti-racist and anti-oppressive and ask our staff to share these values. Through their leadership, our staff become collaborators in our work for collective liberation.
